Men’s Perms: What They Actually Look Like Now
Short answer: a modern men’s perm is a texture service, not a curl service. Larger rods and looser wrapping put bend and movement into straight hair so it holds a shape on its own. Nothing about it has to look like 1985.
I offer two versions. A Men’s Full Perm is $125 and runs about 90 minutes. A Men’s Partial Wave Perm is $100 and runs about 105 minutes. Most men who walk in asking for “a perm” are describing the partial and do not know it yet.
After 15+ years behind the chair, I have talked more men out of the perm they thought they wanted than into one. Here is what the service actually is, what happens in the chair, and how it sits on a fade.
A Modern Men’s Perm Is a Texture Service
The point of a men’s perm now is not curl. It is movement. Hair that falls with shape, keeps that shape past mid-morning, and reads like you were born with good hair rather than like you fought a blow dryer for ten minutes.
Rod size and wrap pattern decide everything. Big rods wrapped loosely give a soft bend through the length, smaller rods give tighter definition. Same chemistry either way, so the result is a decision made in consultation, not something that happens to you.
What Changed Since the Perms You Are Picturing
Then, the goal was uniform tight curl and the curl was the style. Now the texture exists to support a haircut, which is why the perm and the cut get planned together. What a Perm Is Actually Doing to Your Hair
The solution softens the internal bonds that hold your hair in its current shape. The rod holds the hair in the new shape while that happens. The neutraliser locks the bonds back down in the new position, then everything gets rinsed.
That change is permanent on the hair that was treated. It does not wash out. What ends a perm is new growth at the root, which is a very different thing.
Who a Men’s Perm Is Actually For
The clearest candidate is straight, flat hair with no natural bend. Hair that sits down against the head, looks sharp the day of a haircut, then loses all shape by day three. Fine hair needing apparent volume rather than more product also does well, because the wave lifts the hair off the scalp. If you put movement in with heat every morning and it collapses by lunch, this is the fix.
It is not for everyone. Heavily bleached or recently coloured hair may not be a candidate, and I would rather tell you to wait than process hair that cannot take it. It is also not for anyone unwilling to change their shampoo, because sulfate-free is not optional afterward. Length matters too, so the perm gets planned with a men’s haircut built around your hair type rather than separately from it.

The difference is coverage. That is the whole distinction, and nobody explains it as a booking decision, so here it is.

The entire permable top gets wrapped and processed for consistent texture front to back. The right call when your hair is uniformly straight and flat, or when you wear the top long enough that you want it all to move as one piece.
Men’s Partial Wave Perm, $100 and 105 Minutes
Targeted sections only. The crown for lift, the fringe for movement, or wherever your hair goes flat. Everything else stays natural and gets blended into the treated sections.
Why the Partial Costs Less but Takes Longer
Less of your head is being chemically treated, so it costs less. But it books 15 minutes longer than the full perm, which surprises people.
The reason is placement. Wrapping a whole head uniformly is the simpler job. Placing sections precisely, then blending permed hair into untreated hair so there is no visible line where one stops and the other starts, is fussier work. That blending is the actual service, and it takes the time it takes.
Which One Most Men Actually Want
My honest opinion, offered as opinion: most men asking for a perm want the partial. They want lift at the crown or bend through the front, not texture everywhere. A consultation settles it in five minutes and is worth more than a Pinterest screenshot. Both are on the full service and price menu.

What Happens During the Appointment
Ninety to 105 minutes is a real commitment, so you should know what you are buying.
The Consultation Comes First
I look at hair condition, colour history, and length on top, then ask what you want the finished style to do in the morning. Full or partial gets decided here, along with rod size. To talk it through before committing to the time, book a consultation first.
Wash, Section, and Wrap
Hair gets washed clean, sectioned, and wrapped on rods sized to the bend we agreed on. This is the slowest visible part of the appointment and the part that decides the result.
Solution, Processing, and Neutralising
Solution goes on and processes while the bonds soften. Neutraliser follows to lock the new shape in, then a rinse. Timing is watched throughout, which is the part you are trusting a barber with.
The Cut and the Finish
The haircut is part of the plan, not an afterthought. The top gets shaped so the new texture sits where it should, and I show you how to style it before you leave, including how much product to use (always less than you think).
Booking Around a Real Job
Tuesday and Thursday I am open 9am to 9pm, which is the honest answer for anyone commuting out of the Denver Tech Center who needs a 90 to 105 minute appointment outside work hours. Monday, Wednesday and Friday are 11am to 7pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday.
It is a private suite, one client at a time, with a complimentary beer, wine or coffee. If you are sitting somewhere for an hour and a half, it should be somewhere you do not mind sitting.
How Long a Men’s Perm Lasts
Typically three to six months. Fine hair tends to hold longer, coarse hair relaxes sooner, and your result is your own.
What ends it is not the wave vanishing. It is straight new growth at the root, usually visible around eight to twelve weeks, creating a line between permed length and fresh straight hair. Aftercare: The First 48 Hours Decide Everything
For at least 48 hours: no washing, no wetting, no heavy sweating, no swimming, no hat pressing a shape into it. The bonds are still settling, and washing early is the most common reason a perm dies before it should.
Washing and Products After the First Two Days
Wash less often than you used to. Sulfate-free shampoo and an actual conditioner, not a two-in-one. Detangle wet with a wide-tooth comb, never dry, and go easy on heat.
Styling a Permed Top
Product goes on damp hair. Scrunch it in rather than combing it through, then air-dry or diffuse. Combing a wave out flat undoes what you paid for.
