Clippers can’t cut right at the skin. Even with no guard, the blade sits just above it, so a buzz leaves a fine layer of stubble you feel the moment you run a hand back over your head. A head shave takes that last layer off with a razor, and the scalp comes out smooth in every direction.
Getting there takes heat and patience. Stiff, dry hair fights a blade, so it has to be softened first, and the whole scalp has to be covered without hurrying, front to nape and ear to ear. The usual worry is the head itself: a flat spot, a ridge, an old scar. The hour starts with a short conversation about your scalp and how it has reacted to shaving before. If there’s length to take off, Joni brings it down with clippers first, since a razor drags on anything longer than stubble. Then the hot towel goes on for a few minutes, the same way it does before a straight razor shave on the face. Heat swells and softens each hair, and soft hair gives way to the blade with far less pull on the skin. She works lather in against the growth and lathers again any patch that starts to dry before the razor touches it, because dry skin is where scalp razor burn begins.
The first pass follows the way the hair grows: forward at the front, down the sides and back, out from the swirl at the crown. She uses short strokes and holds the skin flat ahead of the blade. On a first head shave, or on skin that bumps easily, that pass is often enough. Going against the grain gets a little closer, but it costs the skin more than it gives a first-timer.
The back of the head is where the hour matters most. You can’t see it in a mirror and can barely reach it in the shower, and it’s where home shaves leave bumps along the nape and missed patches behind the ears. It also has the bony ridge at the base of the skull, where a blade has to slow right down. Joni takes her time there and looks over her work as she goes. Do You Use a Straight Razor on the Head?
Yes. Joni shaves the scalp with a straight razor, the same tool she uses on the face, after the hot towel has softened the hair. On a first head shave she keeps the razor with the grain, which is what keeps the skin calm.
Will I Get Razor Bumps on the Back of My Head?
Usually not. Softening the hair with heat and keeping the razor with the grain prevent most bumps, and a first shave stays gentle. If your nape has bumped up before, say so when you sit down so she knows where to go easy.
How Long Does It Stay Smooth, and How Often Should I Come Back?
A day or two before stubble shows. Most men who keep it shop-smooth come back every week or two and maintain it at home between visits.
