The highlights that give color away are easy to spot: thick, even stripes, a shade far lighter than the hair around them, and a brassy orange cast.
Highlights done well on a man stay partial, on the top and front, where the sun would lighten your hair on its own. They go two or three shades lighter than your natural color, nowhere near platinum. They’re thin pieces that follow the way your hair grows, so they break up through the cut instead of lining up in rows. And they’re toned cool or neutral, because warmth is what makes a man’s hair read as colored. If the lighter pieces sit where a summer outside would have put them, nobody reads them as color.
Box dye works the other way. It lays one shade over every strand, and that flat, even color is exactly what people recognize as dyed. Highlights leave your own color in place and add a few lighter strands to it, so the hair has depth and movement again.
They suit hair that has gone flat or dull. On light brown or dark blond hair, lighter pieces also make early gray harder to pick out, though they don’t cover it the way blending does.

Then Joni puts lightener on the sections you agreed on, and it sits while the color lifts. Dark hair passes through red, orange and yellow on the way up, which is why lightened hair gets toned once it’s rinsed: the toner cancels that warmth and sets the final shade.

While you sit, there’s complimentary beer, wine or coffee, and music on, which makes the time go faster than it sounds.
Lightened hair stays lighter until it’s cut off. What changes is the toner. It fades over a few weeks, and as it does, some warmth creeps back. That’s the orange men worry about, and it’s a short fix: a 30-minute toner visit resets the shade without lightening anything again.
If you stop, there’s nothing to undo. On a short men’s cut, highlights usually grow out and get cut away over three or four haircuts, and because the color was only ever in thin pieces, the grow-out is soft rather than a solid line of roots.
To keep the look, most men refresh every couple of months. Booking the next visit before you leave keeps you on that rhythm.

Will Lightening Damage My Hair?
